Elon Musk is probably best known for being behind the companies Tesla and SpaceX--both very futuristic ventures that propel us forward into the future. One of his latest endeavors is The Boring Company (yes, you read that right). Currently, the only products they sell are simple black baseball hats bearing the company’s logo and flamethrowers. For such a limited product supply, the dichotomy between its offerings is astounding. The company capped its hat orders (ha) at 50,000 orders, which they made no problem reaching. The flamethrowers, which are only up for pre-order, have a max of 20,000 for order, selling at a $500 apiece. The product seems to be quite the hot commodity, netting the company over $3.5million within two days of pre-orders opening.
You might be asking yourself, “what’s the big idea behind these weird projects?” The answer might be even more surprising than what you might think. Elon Musk’s grand master plan is to create underground tunnels for transportation in order to help with the never-ending headache of traffic. One of the obvious steps in the process is to dig, or bore, holes into the ground for the tunnels--probably what inspired the strange moniker. The undertaking will, understandably, require a large amount of money. Since The Boring Company is privately funded, we will likely be seeing more odd products from them in the future to build up their cash for their true goal. If their new offerings are anything like what we have seen so far, I am sure none of them will be very boring.
