The First Color in the World? Bright Pink!

There is good news and even bragging rights for fans of Cotton Candy, Bubble Gum, Strawberry Shortcake, Pink Diamonds, and even Pink the singer. According to new research, the earliest natural color discovered on planet Earth is pink, specifically bright pink.

Scientists looked for clues by observing rocks under the Sahara Desert in Mauritania that are more than 1.1 billion years old. They found pigments of pink and bright pink that were much older than any other colors found that were made by the earliest living things in the ocean.

Scientists analyzed the pigments and the molecules in the rocks to also determine the composition of oceans before life began thriving on Earth.
